Ethiopian Premier League’s (EPL) newest club Mekele City FC (M City) announced the inclusion of three new foreign players to its squad on Wednesday. The three players joining Mekele include two Ghanaians and one from Equatorial Guinea.
The US Embassy and Addis Ababa University will mark the 50th Anniversary of the establishment of the John F. Kennedy Memorial Library at the University.
The library was established in 1967 with the support of the Government of the United States. The occasion will be with the opening photo exhibition of President John F. Kennedy on May 15 and followed by a conference on youth issues, and panel discussion on the role of libraries in supporting education.
Beginning May 16, the photo exhibition will be open to the public inside the JFK Library till end of June, 2017.
Born in Brookline, Massachusetts on May 29, 1917, President Kennedy was the youngest president ever elected to office and is remembered for his passionate advocacy for access to education, encouraging youth to take a greater role in serving their country, and for highlighting the importance of science and technology. He also presided over the establishment of the Peace Corps as well as USAID.
Teddy Afro tops Billboard’s World Albums chart
The fifth music album of Ethiopian musician Teddy Afro has become the first Ethiopian music album as well as the first Ethiopian artist become the number one in the World Album category on Billboard for the week of May 20,2017.
The albums are ranked by Billboard based on this week’s top-selling world music albums, ranked by sales data as compiled by Nielsen Music.
Teddy Afro’s “Ethiopia” Album is followed by “Voices of Angels” album of Celtic Woman Featuring The Orchestra Of Ireland and “Champion” album by Kai. His Ethiopia album only released last week is now available on iTunes and Spotify.
Teddy’s fame came after releasing his first album Abugida, which is considered to be a milestone in contemporary music in Ethiopia. His previous albums include Yasteseryal and Tikur Sew.
Dubbed by many as the most popular, if not populist, contemporary Ethiopian singer and song-writer, Teddy has enjoyed the support and admiration of many. Teddy Afro’s songs are usually politically and socially inspired.
Ethio-Israeli wins Young Jury Award for Best Short Film @ FCAT 2017
Facing the Wall, short movie, realized by young promising Ethio-Israeli director, Alamork Davidian won the Young Jury Award for the Best Short Film at the 14th African Film Festival of Tarifa and Tangier the most important, interesting, original or innovative film productions were awarded.
Born in Ethiopia, Alamork Davidian moved to Israel, where she graduated in the prestigious Sam Spiegel Film and Television School. Her short movie Facing the Wall had its premiere at the Student Film Festival in Tel Aviv where she won the Best Independent Film award.
The story tells about Sureni, 14 years old Ethiopian teenager who, keeping her eyes shut and refusing to leave her bed denies the new reality in the Israeli absorption center.
The Young Jury of FCAT 2017, formed by Gumer Praena, Alba Sánchez and María Ufuoma has also given a special mention to Damien Ounouri's Kindil El Bahr (Algeria/Kuwait/USA, 2016).
The African Film Festival of Tarifa and Tangier is an annual festival devoted to African cinema held in Spain.
Music, cultural festival @ Ghion
The first Annual African Music and Cultural Exchange Festival (AMCEF) will be held in Addis Ababa, at Ghion Hotel gardens on May 27 and 28 featuring prominent musicians from around Africa.
Oliver Mtukudzi (Zimbabwe), Patoranking (Nigeria), Chameleone (Uganda), Mafikizolo (South Africa) and many more from Ethiopia including Jonny Ragga, Helen Berhe, Mehari Brothers and Berry are all scheduled to perform.
The festival provides two days of fun for the whole family with zones dedicated for kids and youth during the day while the main stage will offer evening entertainment for adults.
The AMCEF is the first annual Pan African festival in Ethiopia showcasing an amazing array of vibrant African traditional and contemporary music, dance, art, food and fashion. AMCEF is supported by the Africa Union.
The event is organized by DYMDC in partnership with SICS – a company engaged in creative development, advertising, and experiential marketing – to produce AMCEF after years of experience coordinating landmark shows including Bob Marley Africa Unite Concert.
